Medicine Description
About Clonazepam Benzodiazepine derivative, Anticonvulsant, antipanic, muscle relaxant. Mechanism of Action of Clonazepam Clonazepam binds to the BZD receptor in the CNS. The binding will facilitate GABA mediated chloride channel opening and produce hyperpolarisation. This will result in an increase in the concentration of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and decreases firing rate of neuron. This in turn alters normal functions of the body. Clonazepam also blocks Pentylenetetrazol which is responsible for seizure production and therefore Clonazepam is useful in the treatment of epilepsy. Indications for Clonazepam 1. Anticonvulsant in generalised tonic-clonic, Myoclonic, Status epilepticus and Absence seizures 2. Adjunct treatment in Schizophrenia 3. Neuralgia 4. severe anxiety
