Medicine Description
About Meropenem A synthetic, broad-spectrum carbapenem (beta-lactam) antibiotic. Mechanism of Action of Meropenem It binds to the penicillin binding protein in the cell wall of bacteria and inhibits the enzyme transpeptidase which is responsible for the transpeptidation reaction in peptidoglycan synthesis. It also activates the endogenous enzyme which degrades the peptidoglycan. These results in inhibition of protein synthesis and there by cell wall synthesis. Indications for Meropenem 1.Appendicitis 2.Peritonitis 3.Cystic fibrosis 4.Pneumonia 5.Meningitis 6.Skin infection Interactions for Meropenem Probenecid competes with meropenem for active tubular secretion and thus inhibits the renal excretion of meropenem.
